PMDD is a more intense, less common relative of PMS. It involves severe mood symptoms, such as deep sadness, hopelessness, intense irritability, or anxiety, that show up in the days before a period and significantly interfere with daily life, then improve once the period starts.
How PMDD Differs From PMS
- Symptoms are severe enough to affect school, friendships, or family relationships, not just mildly uncomfortable.
- Mood symptoms are the main feature, rather than being one of several mild complaints.
- PMDD affects a much smaller percentage of people than typical PMS.
What Helps
PMDD is a recognized medical condition with real treatment options, including lifestyle changes, therapy, and, when appropriate, medication prescribed by a doctor. It is not something to just push through alone.
An Important Reminder
- If you regularly feel intense sadness, hopelessness, or anxiety, whether or not it's linked to your cycle, please tell a parent, school counselor, or doctor. Support is available, and you deserve to feel better.
