PCOS is a common hormonal condition where the ovaries produce slightly different hormone levels than typical, which can affect ovulation and the menstrual cycle. It affects a meaningful percentage of people with ovaries, often becoming noticeable in the teenage years.

Possible Signs

  • Irregular or infrequent periods (fewer than 8-9 per year).
  • Excess hair growth on the face, chest, or back.
  • Persistent acne, especially along the jawline.
  • Weight changes that feel hard to manage.
  • Thinning hair on the scalp.

Having one or two of these on their own doesn't mean you have PCOS, many of them overlap with normal puberty. A doctor diagnoses PCOS using a combination of symptoms, blood tests, and sometimes an ultrasound.

Managing PCOS

PCOS is manageable, often through a combination of lifestyle approaches (balanced nutrition, regular movement) and, when needed, medication prescribed by a doctor to help regulate the cycle and ease symptoms.

If This Sounds Familiar

  • If several of these signs apply to you and they've been going on for a while, it's worth bringing up at a doctor's visit. Getting it looked at early makes it easier to manage.
