Endometriosis happens when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or nearby areas. That tissue responds to hormones the same way, thickening and breaking down each cycle, but with nowhere to exit the body, which can cause pain and inflammation.

Possible Signs

  • Period pain that is severe, not eased by usual comfort measures, and interferes with daily activities.
  • Pain during or after activities that shouldn't normally hurt.
  • Pain that occurs even outside of your period.
  • Digestive symptoms during your period, like nausea or bloating, alongside pain.

Endometriosis can take time to diagnose because its symptoms overlap with other conditions. If severe period pain is a recurring pattern, seeing a doctor who takes it seriously and can investigate further is important.

Severe Pain Is Not Something to Just Endure

  • "Bad periods" that regularly stop you from going to school or doing normal activities are not something you have to accept as your normal. Bring it up with a doctor, and if one dismisses your concerns, it's okay to seek a second opinion.
