मुख्य बातें (Key Takeaways)

  • Key body changes that happen before menarche (first period).
  • What clear or white vaginal discharge means during puberty.
  • How to build a discreet school period kit.
  • When to expect your first period based on growth spurts.

Early Physical Signs That Puberty Has Started

A first period (known clinically as menarche) rarely happens without warning. In most girls and teenagers, puberty starts 2 to 3 years before the first period. The first noticeable sign is usually breast development (breast buds), followed by hair growth under the arms and in the pubic area. About 6 to 12 months after breast development begins, you may also notice a growth spurt in your height.

Vaginal Discharge: A Normal Sign Period Is Approaching

About 6 months to 1 year before your first period, you might notice clear, whitish, or slightly yellowish discharge on your underwear. This is completely normal and healthy! It means your body is increasing estrogen production and self-cleaning the vaginal tract.

What Does a First Period Look and Feel Like?

First periods are often light. You might notice a few drops of reddish, pinkish, or brownish blood on your underwear, or light spotting that lasts 2 to 5 days. Mild cramping, bloating, or light lower back aching can happen, but severe pain is not typical for a first period.

डॉक्टर से कब परामर्श लें (When to See a Doctor)

  • •No period by age 15 (primary amenorrhea).
  • •No period within 3 years of breast development starting.
  • •Severe abdominal pain or heavy bleeding saturating a pad in less than 1 hour.
