Period Underwear Guide:
Absorbency, Care, Washing & PFAS Facts

Period underwear combines absorbent micro-fibers with leak-proof barriers to collect menstrual flow. Here is an educational guide to absorbency levels, washing protocols, 8-12 hour hygiene limits, and balanced PFAS facts.

How Period Underwear Works: The 3 Textile Layers

1. Moisture-Wicking Inner Layer

Sits directly against the skin, drawing fluid rapidly into the core to keep skin dry and prevent chafing.

2. Absorbent Antimicrobial Core

Traps menstrual blood within dense micro-fibers, neutralizing odor and preventing fluid displacement under pressure.

3. Waterproof Outer Barrier

Breathable leak-proof membrane preventing liquid from transferring to outer clothing or bedsheets.

Washing & Care Protocol for Maximum Hygiene & Longevity

1. Cold Water Rinse

Rinse under cold tap water immediately after removal until the water runs clear. Avoid hot water, which sets blood stains.

2. Gentle Machine Wash

Wash in a mesh laundry bag on a delicate cold cycle with mild liquid detergent. Do NOT use fabric softeners or bleach.

3. Complete Air Drying

Hang to air dry completely in a well-ventilated area. Avoid high-heat tumble dryers, which degrade waterproof TPU linings.

Understanding PFAS Testing & Product Safety

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have historically been used in textile manufacturing to create water- and stain-resistant barriers. Independent testing has detected fluorine markers in certain absorbent garments.

Many reputable manufacturers now offer products independently certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or fluorine-free testing. Distinguishing chemical detection from actual skin absorption dosage ensures informed, evidence-based choices without undue fear.

When Heavy Flow Requires Medical Assessment

  • Soaking through period underwear or pads rapidly every hour for 2 or more consecutive hours.
  • Passing blood clots larger than a US quarter (2.5 cm / 50p coin).
  • Feeling dizzy, faint, extremely fatigued, or short of breath during menstruation.
